Fuel efficiency is a very important element in the trucking industry. A company can lower the cost and improve profits through fuel savings. In some countries and states, new and more stringent regulations are forcing operators to find ways to improve fuel efficiency of trucks to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

Improving the fuel efficiency of the truck from ten years ago is very difficult. It will require replacements of many truck parts to make the vehicle lighter or improve performance which can be very expensive. So expensive that some businesses opt to purchase new trucks that were developed to be more fuel efficient instead of making upgrades. With semi-trailer trucks, fuel efficiency doesn't stop with the tractor unit. Overall fuel savings can be improved with the addition of trailer skirts. The addition of these parts on a trailer reduces wind resistance. The aerodynamic improvement lowers the fuel needed to power the truck. Many trailers come out from factories with skirts already installed. The Skirts also keeps the overall appearance of the trucks tidy and good-looking. All these benefits are attained with minimal cost and little change required by the installation. There are several things to consider in choosing trailer skirts. The most important one is the material. The primary choices for skirt material are aluminum, plastic and fiber glass. Each one of these materials have advantages and disadvantages. These materials vary in durability, ease of repair, appearances and cost.
