Ride comfort is an important component of operating a truck. It helps prevent injuries and minimize fatigue. Staying comfortable is difficult when you are sitting over an engine that produces massive horsepower and torque. Not to mention the rigid chassis and suspension designed to haul enormous tonnage.

Fortunately, there are many ways to improve ride comfort of a semitrailer truck.

Be a smooth operator. How smooth you are with the controls translates to a smoother ride. Smooth shifting, braking, and acceleration affects ride comfort significantly. A quick but gradual increase in engine revs produces less vibrations and less sudden forces.

Comfort upgrades. Some truck parts can be upgraded to improve comfort. An example would be the suspension springs. Truck suspension springs are built to be very rigid in order to withstand tremendous loading they are designed for. The stiffness of the springs is hardly an issue when the truck is fully loaded since the weight makes the springs compress easily. But when the truck is unloaded or have sub-maximal load, the spring stiffness is very obvious. Every bump on the road can be felt.

Replacing conventional springs with modern adjustable air springs allows the driver to control spring rate. This allows the truck to retain loading capability while enabling comfortable ride during unloaded trips.

Suspension upgrades can also be performed on the trailer. Remember that any force generated by the trailer is also transferred to the tractor unit. Reducing these forces can help with comfort. Aside from suspension, the stock seats can be replaced with ones with more cushion or those that have suspension technology.

On the right truck. If you are headed for a rough road, do not use heavy trucks that are not designed for rough roads. Not only is it uncomfortable, you are also risking damage to the truck. Do not use large articulated trucks when a small straight truck is capable of doing the job.

A smart operator brings with him spare parts. If you are driving an articulated truck, you not only have to bring parts for the truck, but also spare parts for trailer. All these parts add weight and clunking noises that affect comfort.
