In terms of braking power, the air disc brakes have proven to be superior compared to conventional drum brakes. The shift towards the use of this braking system is comparable to the air suspension truck. The changes in regulations that required trucks to have a shorter stopping-distance have compelled trucking operators to adopt air disc brakes. The reliability of a braking system goes beyond the braking power. It also involves the toughness of the parts. The disc brakes have the advantage over drum brakes in terms of durability. They are also better at withstanding severe operating conditions. The durability of the braking system provides trucking operators with the opportunity to make substantial savings from needing fewer replacement parts. As an example, a brake disc for truck will only need replacing once or twice throughout the life of the vehicle. The brake pads which require regular replacements are inexpensive. With air disc brakes, replacing the pads is quick and easy. It only takes around fifteen minutes while replacing the shoes in drum brakes can take an hour. Air disc brakes are very durable and requires less maintenance. However, the reliability of air disc brakes comes with a price. Aftermarket companies can charge around 8500 kr for every axle. But to many operators, the initial cost is a worthwhile investment.
